What Is Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership?

22 March, 2020

It’s a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening wise and courageous leadership.

We do this by drawing on more than two millennia of philosophical thinking to foster in-depth, practical discussions that sharpen critical reasoning and strengthen moral courage. By understanding the fundamental philosophies that underpin our society, today’s leaders can learn to critically examine the ethical impact of their actions – so they can help build a better society together.

“There’s too much management in the world and not enough leadership, and when you talk about leadership you have to talk about ethical leadership”

Martyn Myer AO, President, Myer Foundation

The Cranlana Method

We don’t teach leadership skills. We help leaders put the skills they have to use – with clarity, wisdom and courage.

Our programs are dialogue-based and immersive, bringing small groups of high-level leaders together for discussions that are wide-ranging and expertly guided. By relating philosophical concepts directly to experiences and challenges they’ve encountered, participants examine and strengthen their personal ethical frameworks, giving themselves a solid footing for steering future decision-making – so that they’re fully prepared in the moments when the pressure is most intense.

“It’s why great leaders achieve what they do, and what motivates them, and that’s what the Cranlana program is all about”

Martyn Myer AO, President, Myer Foundation

The programs are rigorous, in-depth and practical, and they ignite fundamental shifts in understanding that strengthen participants’ capabilities as effective and ethical leaders.

Today’s Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership is a collaboration between the original Cranlana Programme and the prestigious Vincent Fairfax Fellowship, founded by the Vincent Fairfax Ethics in Leadership Foundation. It brings more than a half-century of combined leadership experience to bear in cultivating an ethical focus among Australia’s leaders.

“Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership is really on the cusp of a very exciting new era. It’s got a solid core of activity and it’s in such demand.”

Vanessa Pigrum, CEO, Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership

In 2019 the organisation partnered with Monash University, Australia’s largest higher education institution, to reach an even wider cohort of current and future leaders across the nation – deepening its contribution to building better, more ethically driven leadership.

“It’s about influencing ethical leadership in Australia and Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership is going to have a really big impact on a lot of people.”
