Cranlana Confidential – Prof Dawn Freshwater & Prof Susan Elliott – Wednesday 24 June
Cranlana Confidential is one of the opportunities we’re creating for our alumni to continue to draw on each other’s experience. This online program is a series of 60 minute conversations, offering an opportunity for you to engage with a prominent alumnus from your own sector, or one you’re interested in. Our Lead Moderator, Peter Mares, will start the session with a one-on-one interview discussing the guest’s experience of trying to lead their organisation ethically and effectively, before segueing to a group conversation.
Capped at 20 participants, and conducted under the strictest confidentiality, this is your opportunity to talk frankly with leaders in your field, and engage in in-depth, meaningful discussion with your peers.
Exclusive to Cranlana alumni, these sessions are rare chances to share experiences with professional colleagues who can act as a sounding board, feeding into your thinking and actions on important issues.
On Wednesday 24 June Cranlana Confidential will focus on higher education, a sector particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. With all face-to-face classes halted, universities had to make a sudden transition to online teaching, while at the same time coping with a massive drop in revenue. Travel bans have limited the number of international students who can take up their studies, while many students in Australia are in financial distress, because the work they rely on to support their studies has disappeared. Tensions in the Australia-China relationship pose a major risk for Australian universities.
Two leaders in the university sector will join Peter Mares to share their experiences.
Professor Dawn Freshwater is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland, a post she took up in March 2020, just as pandemic hit. Before that, Professor Freshwater was Vice-Chancellor at the University of Western Australia and chaired Australia’s ‘Group of Eight’ leading research-intensive universities. Professor Freshwater is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, a Board Director for Research Australia, and a member of the Women in Health Science Committee, National Health and Medical Research Council.
Professor Susan Elliott is Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Senior Vice-President (Education) at Monash University. Her academic qualifications include Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, Doctor of Medicine, and Graduate Certificates of Higher Education and Health Economics. Professor Elliott is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and she holds the honour of being the first Australian and first woman elected president of the Asia Pacific Association for International Education
